It's Midnight, Do You Know Where YOUR Fraktur Is?

For that matter, how many of us even know what fraktur is?

The word "Fraktur" can have a couple of different meanings. It is not only used to denote a type of German lettering and typesetting but also a form of folk art popular among German immigrants settling in Pennsylvania.  And as you know, many of these immigrants eventually settled here in the Shenandoah Valley, bringing this form of artwork with them.  Check out http://antiquesandthearts.com/archive/frak.htm to lean more about this fascinating subject.

We have recently added a beautiful example of fraktur to the Museum's collection.  This "Love Knot" was created by a relative of Jacob and Sarah Bushong.  Dating to about 1826, this example contains a Valentine type message.  A facsimile now hangs in the North Parlor.

Judy Drury, Supervisor of Visitor Services has developed several items for the Museum Store featuring the "Love Knot" image.  On February 14, 2010 at 2:00 PM the Battlefield will be hosting a musical afternoon to launch the new products.  We need costumed volunteers to act as hosts, hostesses, greeters, and ushers.  If you'd like to help out, send me an email and I'll get back to you with specific details.  It should be a fun afternoon and a great way to support the Battlefield.
